Don Hoge introduced the Guest Speaker.

LTJG Enoksen thanked the Auxiliary for our help and doing what we do.  His talk included training minimums, pilot and aircrew procedures, why the practice must be done at night, why they need cover by a surface unit, what the risks are to the aircraft, the swimmers, the boats, what is PATCH, MATCH, what we should watch out for.  He also spoke about the dangers to surface vessels being too close to a hovering helicopter.  Also he spoke about the danger of flying, disintegrating rotator blades should the helicopter go into the water.  The talk was followed by an interesting question and answer session.

CM Walter Murray

Walter Murray was out of town and in his absence Don Hoge announced that the third VHF FM radio with DSC is operational in the radio room.  He invited those interested to try it out.  He also mentioned the need to have MMSI numbers readily available to watchstanders..

PV Cono Casale submitted the following report:

11-10 Program Visitors are visiting all Partners on a monthly basis. Another new Partner has been added, RIDENOW power sports of Clearwater, bringing the total number of Partners to 24 serviced by our Flotilla. We encourage our Program Visitors to enlist the merchants you deal with to sign up as Partners as long as no other PV services them. PV’s remember to stamp the material you distribute with our Flotilla address and phone number. The stamp is located at the radio room in the desk drawer. Please inform Elaine Clark, FSO-MA or myself when more books or pamphlets need to be ordered.  Don’t forget to distribute the schedule for our Safe Boating Courses.

VE Bill Clark reported the following:

Just a reminder, I have initiated a special email address to help boaters who would like to schedule a vessel safety check. This new email address is safeboat@verizon.net. When I receive a request, I will distribute the checks to those members who need vessel exams to maintain their competency.Congratulations. Thanks all the hard work of the vessel examiners, we are at 100 vessel exams for the year. I especially want to recognize John Fiorillo who has the most so far with 20 vessel exams. However, I also want to acknowledge Buddy Casale and Larry O’Brien who are in a very close second with 14 exams each. While I know it gets harder later in the year, please continue to try to do vessel exams, and if you would like to do a special event, please let me know so I can help you.

Below is the number of exams done so far this year. I would like to remind all vessel examiners that they must have at least five (5) vessel exams to maintain their certification. Please make sure to do a 7038 each time you do vessel examinations. In the comment section, please indicate where the exams were done and the date. The 7038 must be sent to Walt Murray at his auxdatawpm@verizon.net address. Please be sure to send me a copy of the 7038 as well.

  • On July 14th, 15th, & 17th 11 Students graduated the ABS Course. Scores on the Core Chapters were mixed, not as high as we have had in the past. The class consisted of non-boaters & 4 students under 21. Scores remained high on FL. Law.

PA Tom Loughlin reported the following:

This past month was interesting. I became a member of the Military and Veterans Committee of the Clearwater Chamber of Commerce along with the AIRSTA and Sand Key. The goal/mission is to make the public even more aware of the various agencies (such as the Auxiliary) and what we can do for them and that Pinellas County has the second largest concentration of military / veterans in the United States. The AIRSTA is the largest employer in the Greater Clearwater area.

The Dunedin Recreation Center hosted a Safety Day for their 180 children at their day camp. John Fiorillo applied tattoos and helped Charlie Gilbert with the Officer Snook Trash Pollution Game. Edna and Ernie Schwabe talked Doreen Kordek of the D7 Store into joining us. I even have a picture of Edna dancing with Ernie (wearing the 7’ tall inflatable Joe Coastie costume).

Tom reported that the Safety Harbor Boat Club was holding Boating Safety event. They asked us if we would put up a booth.  Tom said that he needs more information on this.

PB Dick Bangs submitted the following report:
